Reminder to slow down around emergency services vehicles following collision

Following a recent collision, ACT Policing is reminding drivers that they are required to slow down to 40km/h when passing emergency services vehicles displaying a blue or red flashing light.

About 6.15am on Saturday, 16 September 2023, ACT Policing attended a single vehicle collision on the Majura Parkway.

The vehicle, which had struck a kangaroo and was stationary on the southbound side of the road, could not be moved and a tow truck was arranged.

About 6.55am, two ACT Policing officers were seated inside their police vehicle awaiting the tow truck. Their vehicle was stationary, emergency lights activated, and was blocking traffic from passing.

At this time, the police vehicle was struck from behind by a white Ford Ranger which was estimated to be travelling at between 80-100km/h at the time of impact.

Both members were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Canberrans are reminded that the penalty for failing to slow near emergency vehicles is $289 and two demerit points.
