Safe summer wraps up for another year

ACT Policing’s Safe Summer campaign has now wrapped up, but our focus on road safety and anti-social behaviour will continue throughout 2016.

ACT Policing’s Regional Targeting Team (RTT) were out in force, issuing 137 Criminal Infringement Notices (CINs) over the Summer period, more than double the previous year’s total.

The highest amount of CINs issued were for urinating in a public place (57) and consuming liquor in a public place (57).

A number of other CINs were issued for defacing private premises, failing to leave premises when directed, supplying liquor to an intoxicated person, and abuse, threaten, intimidate staff.

The RTT is at the forefront of the police effort to reduce alcohol-related anti social behaviour. The team provides high-visibility policing in Canberra’s license premises and entertainment precincts through the ACT.

RTT Sergeant Max Mokrij said the team is proactive in its policing, by engaging with licensed premises and members of the public to identify problem areas and people.

“We want everyone to enjoy their night out, and get home safely.

“We will continue to work with licensed venues across the ACT to ensure a safe environment for staff and patrons,” Sergeant Mokrij said.

Road safety is also a key focus of the Safe Summer campaign. There was a decrease in the number of people caught drink driving over the Summer period (242), compared to Summer 2014-15 (265).

“While we are pleased to see a decrease in these numbers, it is alarming that people continue to drink and drive, putting their lives and the lives of others at risk.” Sergeant Mokrij said.
