Local drivers are being reminded to keep to the speed limit following highway speed enforcement activity in recent days.

On Sunday, 9 July 2023, officers from ACT Road Policing were proactively patrolling the Kings Highway at Kowen, as part of school holiday safe travel operations.

A 31-year-old Kambah man, driving a light truck, was detected travelling at 131km/h in a 100km/h zone.  He was issued an infringement notice for $700 and will receive four demerit points.

While officers were dealing with the light truck speeder, they detected a 31-year-old Karabar man on a provisional NSW licence failing to slow down to 40km/h as he passed the police vehicle with its lights flashing. He was detected at 62km/h and issued an infringement notice with 2 demerit points  - which may suspend his right to drive in the ACT.

Police are reminding all road users that in the ACT, they must slow to a minimum of 40km/h around emergency vehicles that have their emergency lights flashing – regardless of which lane you are in.

Shortly after, a 31-year-old Queanbeyan man was detected travelling at 123km/h and a 39-year-old O’Connor man was detected at 120km/h in the 100km/h zone. Both were issued infringement notices for $468 and each will incur 3 demerit points.

During the operation, police also detected two unregistered vehicles travelling along the Kings Highway.

At the same time, officers from Road Policing and ACT Policing Rural Patrol conducted driver alcohol and drug testing at the Cotter as part of the snow safe initiative. Approximately 230 RBT’s and vehicle inspections occurred.

Police were generally happy with the results at the Cotter, with the exception of a 42-year-old Coombs man who was detected performing an illegal U-turn over double dividing lines and was issued a $400 infringement notice with three demerit points.

About 4.30am on Monday, 11 July 2023, officers on patrol from Belconnen Station detected a Hyundai i30 being driven on Gungahlin Drive, Aranda in excess of the 90km/h speed limit.

The officers followed the i30 in a marked police vehicle for three kilometres, at a speed of 150 km/h before the driver pulled over in Kaleen.

The driver, a 45-year-old Wanniassa woman, was issued with an infringement notice for travelling at more than 45km/h in excess of the speed limit, which carries a fine of $1,841, and under recently-enacted legislation she was also issued an Immediate Suspension Notice, suspending her right to drive in the ACT for 90 days.

ACT Policing is encouraging everyone to enjoy their holidays but Canberrans are reminded stick to the speed limit, drive to the conditions, take a break and don’t allow yourself to get distracted whilst driving.
