Sixth Fatality on ACT Roads (Update)

UPDATE

As a result of a collision at the intersection of Baldwin Drive and Maribyrnong Avenue, Kaleen on Friday, 4 May 2018, an ACT Policing Officer has been summonsed to appear before the ACT Magistrates Court.

About 8.00pm on the 4th of May, there was a collision between a marked police vehicle that was responding to a priority one incident (this requires an immediate police response to a potentially life threatening situation) and a woman’s vehicle. Following treatment, tragically, the woman later passed away as a result of her injuries.

Chief Police Officer for the ACT Justine Saunders said that following the investigation and consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions the officer has been summoned to appear before the court for culpable driving of a motor vehicle causing death contrary to s.29(2) Crimes Act.

"This is a tragic incident and I continue to offer my deepest condolences to all affected,” Assistant Commissioner Saunders said.

The officer involved has been suspended from duty.

As this matter is now the subject of criminal prosecution, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment.
