Speeding in the sights of ACT Policing this month

Speeding is one of the leading contributor to deaths and serious injuries on Canberra's roads, that’s why ACT Policing will be targeting speeding motorists this April as part of its joint multi-agency road safety strategy.

Last month, more than 370 drivers were caught exceeding the posted speed limit on Canberra roads. Of these, more than 29 motorists were detected speeding in school zones and 24 reckless motorists were caught exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 45 km/h.

Acting Officer in Charge Traffic Operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said road safety is a priority for ACT Policing and should be a priority for all road users.

“The fact is that many fatal and serious traffic collisions that occur on Canberra roads each year are directly attributable to motorists who exceed the posted speed limit. Collisions do not simply happen, they are caused and they are preventable.”

“Speeding reduces a drivers reaction time, their ability to control the vehicle and lengthens stopping distances, which increases the likelihood and severity of a collision. I urge all road users to prioritise their safety on our roads, slow down and stop risking not only your life, but those of all road users,” Station Sergeant Boorman said.

“Police often hear excuses for speeding from motorists, there is simply no excuse, it's better you arrive late than never. Kill your speed, not yourself.”

Drivers caught speeding face fines ranging from $203 and one demerit point, to $1,811 and six demerit points.

In addition to the monthly target, two double demerit periods will be enforced in April, over the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends. Double demerit points are effective from the first instance on Thursday, 13 April until midnight on Monday, 17 April and from the first instance on Friday 21 April until midnight on Tuesday 25 April 2017.
