UPDATE: Witnesses sought to suspicious fire in Phillip

About 6.30am, Friday 12 October 2018, members of ACT Criminal Investigations executed a search warrant at an address in Garran. 

The search warrant related to the ongoing investigation into a suspicious fire and burglary which occurred at Phillip Enclosed Oval on Monday, 8 October 2018.

As a result of the search warrant, a young person was arrested in relation to a burglary connected with the fire. The young person will be charged and is expected to face the ACT Children’s Court today.

Investigations into this matter are ongoing, and Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have dash cam footage of the park or surrounding area between 10.00pm, Monday 8 October 2018, and 1.00am Tuesday 9 October 2018.

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to a suspicious fire in Phillip on Monday night (8 October, 2018).

About 11.30pm, police attended Phillip Enclosed Oval at the intersection of Ainsworth Street and Yamba Drive where an equipment shed used by Little Athletics ACT was reported to be alight.

ACT Fire & Rescue attended and extinguished the fire. The shed itself sustained significant internal damage and the equipment contained was destroyed.

Following an analysis of the scene, ACT Policing Forensics and fire investigators believe the fire to be suspicious.

Police also conducted a search of the park, and identified several damaged windows and a damaged office space that had been ransacked and had items stolen from it.

Detective Acting Station Sergeant Mark Rowswell appealed for witnesses to come forward.

“I would urge anyone with information on this incident to contact police or Crime Stoppers immediately,” Detective Acting Station Sergeant Rowswell said.

“I would also strongly urge those involved in this incident to come forward before police come knocking on your door.”
