Vulnerable road user detected at 183kmh

Monthly traffic focus - Vulnerable road users

On Saturday 18 August 2018, ACT Policing Traffic Operations detected a motorcyclist travelling at 183 kilometres per hour (km/h) in an 80km/h zone on Yamba Drive, Isaacs.  The rider was also observed travelling between lanes of traffic on several occasions at excessive speeds.

After police stopped the rider an inspection of the motorcycle revealed it had a defective rear tyre.

Police issued the 21-year-old rider, who held an ACT provisional motorcycle licence, a traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 kilometres per hour, overtaking too closely to other vehicles, and for having non-standard (defective) tyres. The rider was also issued with a defect notice.

Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Acting Station Sergeant David Wills said this display of driving was particularly disappointing, as this month’s road safety message is a focus on vulnerable road users.

“While police are urging all motorists to be aware of vulnerable road users this month, all road users still need to use common sense and obey the rules when driving or riding,” Acting Station Sergeant Wills said.

“Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable, so for this rider to exceed the speed limit by more than 100 kilometres an hour is galling. By doing so they are making themselves even more vulnerable.”

“This rider is showing little to no regard for their own safety, and is gambling with the lives of other road users at the same time.”
