School zones back for term three

ACT Policing has some timely reminders for the community as Canberra school children head back to the classroom for term three tomorrow (Monday, 12 July 2021).

Drivers are reminded that 40km/h speed limits are once again in effect in school zones between 8am and 4pm. Police will be targeting speeding in school zones throughout Canberra.

ACT Policing’s Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said motorists will face tough penalties if they choose to ignore school zone speed limits.

“These speed limits are in place for a reason – to protect children around schools,” Detective Inspector Hofmeier said.

“If you’re driving near a school, please stick to the sign-posted speed limit and be extra alert as young children are some of our most vulnerable road users.”

Police are also encouraging parents, guardians and teachers to ensure children understand how to keep themselves safe, particularly when walking to and from school, and to educate them about stranger safety.

Parents, guardians and teachers are reminded to report any suspicious persons or activity to ACT Policing Operations immediately following an incident on 131 444. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
