Canberra drivers targeted in long weekend operation

ACT Road Policing conducted a targeted operation during the Canberra Day long weekend, identifying almost 100 offences including a driver travelling at more than 50km/h above the limit.   

From Saturday (12 March 2023) to Monday (14 March 2023) officers detected a range of offences including speeding, unregistered and uninsured vehicles and drivers not stopping at intersections and failing to give way.  

In the most serious incident, the driver of a white utility was observed travelling at 143km/h in a posted 90km/h zone on William Hovell Drive on Monday afternoon.  

The driver was issued an infringement for travelling at a speed greater than 45km/h over the posted limit. He will lose six demerit points and incur an $1841 fine. 

From Friday to Monday, nine drivers were taken into custody for drink driving and one for driving with illicit drugs in their system.  

Also of concern to police were 20 vehicles identified as being unregistered, uninsured or both. To drive a vehicle without registration and compulsory third party insurance puts you at risk of significant fines of almost $1000. It is far cheaper to properly register your vehicle than to incur a fine.  

ACT Policing is urging all drivers to obey the road rules. They are there to keep all road users safe and are not optional.
