Excellent result on ACT roads for grand final weekend

ACT Policing’s Road Policing unit conducted 1292 breath tests on the weekend (23-25 October 2020) with only one driver exceeding the legal limit.

Officer in Charge, Road Policing Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman congratulated the ACT community for the positive result on what is typically one of the busiest weekends of the year for police targeting drink drivers.

“To record just one positive breath test from more than a thousand is an outstanding outcome and something we haven’t seen for quite some time,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.

“With two big sporting grand finals and Spring Carnival racing over one weekend, we knew people would be out celebrating and I’m delighted to see most people were enjoying themselves responsibly.

“This weekend was a great example of people thinking ahead and planning an alternate and safe way home. 

“With the added danger from wet and slippery conditions over the weekend, it was most encouraging to see drivers taking the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol seriously.”

Last Thursday ACT Policing warned motorists police would be out targeting drinking driving over the grand final weekend.

Unfortunately one driver failed to get the message and was stopped at a roadside breath testing station in Deakin at 8:30am on Sunday where they recorded a blood alcohol content of 0.063.  They will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
